On Saturday the 5th of February, Madagascar was hit by Cyclone Batsirai, which made landfall near the south-eastern city of Mananjary, located 530kms away from the capital, Antananarivo.
MAF surveys reported little wind damage but severe flooding that would cause road and infrastructural damage, likely to affect harvests.
According to the National Bureau for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), 143,718 people were affected by this tropical storm with 21,922 people displaced to temporary shelters set up by the government (*).
On the 10th of February, as cargo was transported by road, our Pilot, Wouter Nagel, flew three staff from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit and five Medair staff to Mananjary, where they set up water tanks to provide clean drinking water wherever the need was greatest.
Medair and MAF continue to work alongside each other to bring help to those living in Mananjary as the effects of Batsirai are still being felt in that region.
