How MAF is helping Maasai kids to succeed in class
Every time a MAF flight lands among the Maasai of Loita Hills, it brings help, hope and healing to the people.
A flight from the Kenyan capital Nairobi provided transport to a MAF team to visit the RedTribe projects in Enairebuk where new dormitories are helping school children to sleep safely during the week and be better rested for their education.
The dormitory will give a safe place to stay for the students during weekdays when the school is in session to save them from walking over 5km to and from class in the dangerous fields.
Carlos Kosgei, the Headteacher at the Maasai Academy says that their school gives children from all backgrounds an opportunity to receive education.
“Through the RedTribe organisation, children from poor backgrounds receive sponsorship to study at the school,” said Mr Kosgei. “The dormitories that the MAF team helped to build will also give the children ample time to concentrate on their studies within the school grounds.”
Pelua Siloma, the Country Director at RedTribe, shares that he is grateful for the ardent support by MAF towards changing the lives of the Enairebuk community.
“I feel positive about the trip from MAF, and I am hopeful for more partnerships between us especially on the education projects. The biggest challenge that is making our children fail to attend school is lack of food and school fee,” he said.
“We have a garden where we farm different foodstuff that we use to prepare meals for the children in our academy and also share with the community when in surplus.”
The dormitories by MAF will also give the children ample time to concentrate on their studies within the school grounds.
On board the flight to Enairebuk were MAF Kenya Country Director Susan Kolum with MAF Denmark CEO Peter Hedelund and Kristina Bay, MAF International’s Organisational Development Manager.
Peter’s visit came as a follow-up on projects they had done with RedTribe, and a chance to assess what more support they could give.
“MAF Denmark supported RedTribe with building a dormitory for girls and boys attending the Maasai Academy school through our affiliate group MAF Co-Pilot who had visited the school and helped in the building work in 2022,” said Peter.
Susan said MAF Kenya was grateful for the long-running partnership with the RedTribe that has impacted the community positively.
“It is great to visit and witness the impact on ground that MAF Kenya, and MAF Denmark in partnership with RedTribe have brought to the Maasai community; from building an airstrip that ensures 30 minutes of travel to Enairebuk; to supporting children through school, we can only hope to find more opportunities to bring more help, hope and healing to this community,” said Susan.
