A prompt medevac from remote Nomane saved the life of a baby girl, whose father anxiously performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while hoping and praying for the plane to arrive in time.
A Story By Kowara Bell
“If baby Inan-B hadn't been transported by MAF on time to the nearest hospital she wouldn’t have survived because she was already not breathing,” said Jonathan Onge, recalling his critically ill daughter’s experience.
“We were in the village when the baby became very sick and had trouble breathing. At the Nomane health centre, staff told us her condition was critical and she needed proper medical care,” he said.
The health centre had informed Jonathan and his wife that they had called MAF to request for a medevac. The parents waited anxiously as they watched their daughter's condition worsen by the hour.
“I performed mouth-to-mouth on the baby to keep her alive, as I prayed and hoped for the plane to arrive in time to save my daughter.
“Thankfully, we were relieved to hear the plane, and we were airlifted to the hospital and the baby was assisted and she is now alive and well.”
“If the plane was not here my baby daughter would not have survived. We are so thankful for the pilot and for MAF to hear our distress and come to our rescue,” Jonathan said.
Nancy Chris, Senior Nursing Officer at Nomane's only health facility, emphasised MAF's crucial role, stating that many lives would have been lost if MAF had not been present.
“For the past ten years that I have worked at Nomane Sub-Health Centre, we have been very fortunate and grateful to MAF for their assistance in transporting critically ill patients to the nearest hospital,” she said.
The facility handles referrals from aid posts across the 13 ward areas, highlighting the importance of timely medical assistance in such an isolated environment.
Despite growing populations in the area, Nancy explained that the health centre is doing its best to care for the patients, and MAF has been supporting the health team in reaching that goal despite Nomane’s remote location.
“Many times, when we face serious cases such as severe bush knife wounds or complications during childbirth, MAF is just a call away to help us fly the patients out for more advanced medical care,” Nancy said.
Thomas Kewane Hul, a community leader in the Nomane area, commended MAF for its dependability and excellent service it provides to their area.
“Whenever we try to reach MAF in an emergency through phone calls we receive a timely response. Despite having their daily routine duties, they still find time to attend to our emergencies as soon as possible.”
Andrew Yalbai, a regular MAF customer who travels in and out from Nomane, says that MAF has consistently provided reliable and efficient service in the Nomane area.
“Although we have a road link to our town, we are frequently cut off from service due to the deterioration of the road, which prevents us from accessing essential services,” Andrew said.
