Several schools on the outskirts of Goroka received Bibles so that young people can read the word of God for themselves.
A Story By MAF Technologies, Kowara Bell
More than 5000 printed Bibles, donated through MAF Technologies, have been handed out at several schools and training colleges outside of Goroka in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands.
Among the colleges that received the Bibles were Ginitoka Junior High School and Primary School, which earlier this year received 2000 printed standard size Bibles, making them one of the largest recipients of the donation.
Greg Ruruk, a sixth grader at Ginitoka primary says after receiving the Bible and starting to study the word, his reading skills and grades have improved.
"I have read through some of the verses and it has given me good knowledge for my coming days. It also started to assist me with doing morning, afternoon, and night prayers before going to bed and waking up early," Greg said.
Parent representative, Susan Siwi, who has a daughter enrolled in Ginitoka High School emphasised that a Bible is an important tool to be given to a child, as it will serve as a basis for them to make good decisions in their lives.
“I see that growth is not an overnight thing, but as she (her daughter) matures, she will return to the word of God to refresh and regain her strength from the time she spent reading and memorising God's Word,” Susan said.
“When we are no longer in her life and she leaves this place, the word of God that she read from the Bible and memorised will guide her through each challenge she will face in her life.”
MAF Technologies Learning Tech department Manager, Carolyn Bubu, said the Bible boxes that were distributed in 2024 were provided by the Australian Bible Society since both organisations share a common mission in sharing God’s word.
“These schools and colleges that received the Bibles had submitted requests for the Bibles, leading to the donation,” Carolyn said.
“The Bibles given to the students are aimed at supporting a student’s growth and that is something wonderful and encouraging we want to give these kids.”
Peter Johnson, a senior teacher from Ufeto primary school, another centre of learning that also received donated Bibles, said combining education and God’s word lays the foundation for a brighter future for the students.
“We can only teach the students to a certain level in a learning environment, but if they are not filled with God’s word, then I am not sure how their future would be. So, it is important for them to understand God’s word,” he said.
