A new agreement between MAF and the Autonomous Bougainville Government paves the way for aviation and technology support to reach remote communities across the region.
On 4 April 2025, Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) proudly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), marking a historic milestone in our partnership to bring essential services to isolated communities in Bougainville. This agreement secures the ABG's financial support for the startup of MAF operations in the region, advancing our mission to provide help, hope, and healing through aviation and technology.
The MOU was signed by The Honourable President Ishmael Toroama, Chief Secretary Kearnneth Nanei, and John Woodberry, Bougainville Launch Team Director. Also in attendance were Dr. Naihuwo Ahai, Senior Strategic Advisor to the President; Hubert Diou, Chief of Staff; Pastor Albert Magoi, Head of Bougainville Christian Churches Association (BCCA); and Bishop Abraham Toroi, Head of the United Church.
We are excited to begin construction and are working hard to secure additional funding for the hangar. We hope to break ground by June, with MAF Technologies already planning computer courses and solar installations for the future.
Through this collaboration, MAF will provide aviation services essential to healthcare, education, church outreach, and development work, alongside MAF Technologies initiatives. These initiatives will include computer training courses, and solar power solutions for schools, clinics, and hospitals.
The signing of the MOU also affirms ABG’s commitment to MAF’s swift launch. The first phase of this partnership includes the construction of an aircraft hangar, the establishment of a MAF Tech office, and the development of a technical centre and storefront. President Toroama announced a generous allocation of 1 million Kina (approx. 250,000 USD) for Phase 1 infrastructure, alongside a vehicle donation to support operations.
John Woodberry expressed gratitude for ABG’s generous support, stating, “We are excited to begin construction and are working hard to secure additional funding for the hangar. We hope to break ground by June, with MAF Technologies already planning computer courses and solar installations for the future.”
The signing ceremony was filled with celebration, with smiles, applause, and a joyful cheer of “Hoorah!” marking the occasion. Bishop Toroi, who played a pivotal role in MAF’s consideration of Bougainville, concluded the gathering with a prayer of blessing and thanksgiving.
This is a momentous step forward for MAF, and we are filled with gratitude and anticipation for the future. We rejoice in what God has done and look forward to the impact this partnership will have on the lives of the people of Bougainville.
